CONCEPTUAL STATEMENT: In the context of Healthy Living I will design and produce an Animated Story for the Public to be used to show them healthy foods My digital story does relate to the context of healthy living because the story is about eating healthy food and sports along with some other things. My digital story is no useful for my target audience because it is very vague about other things except healthy eating. The way that I feel about my digital story is that it is very interactive. I could also use scratch or create digital stories to make games and art. Pumpkin Pastries/ Pumpkin Pie?

Ingredients

  • Chilled pie dough for one single-crust 9-inch pie (Pie crust recipe here)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup (65 grams) light brown sugar
  • 1 (15-ounce) can pure pumpkin puree or 2 cups (440 grams) fresh pumpkin puree
  • 3/4 cup (175 ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Method:
  • Prepare Pie Crust: Roll out dough so that it is two inches larger than your pie dish. Gently press dough down into the dish so that it lines the bottom and sides. (Be careful not to pull or stretch the dough). Trim dough to within 1/2-inch of the dish edge.
  • Fold edges of dough underneath itself, creating a thicker, 1/4-inch border that rests on the lip of the dish. Crimp edges.  Refrigerate while you make the pie filling.
  • Make Pie Filling: Whisk eggs and both sugars together until smooth. Add pumpkin puree, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and the salt. Stir until well blended.
  • Bake Pie: Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Transfer pie shell to a baking sheet. Pour pumpkin filling into the pie shell. Bake pie at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees and bake 35 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick or thin knife plunged it into the pie, about 2 inches from the edge, comes out clean. Rotate once or twice during baking. If, while the pie bakes, the tops of the crust becomes too dark, cover with a thin strip of aluminum foil.
  • Cool Pie: Cool on a wire rack for 2 hours or until room temperature. Cut into 8 wedges and serve alone or topped with whipped cream.

Title: Secret Letters
Author: Leah Scheier
Genre: Mystery, Romance
I would recommend the book to Anthony, because he likes mystery books as well.  But I don't think he will like it too much because it have a bit of romance, and it doesn't require you to guess the culprit.  There isn't any big plot twists either, so it is kind of boring.

Rich Task Week 10

For rich task, we have to figure out how long our family have travelled to reach Auckland.  Linda's family came from Tonga, and travelled a total of 2 003 km to reach where she lived now.  My family flew to Auckland from Fuzhou in China, and flew 9 098 km.  My family have travelled further than Linda's family, with a difference of 7 093 km.

Moon Festival

Our family celebrates the Moon Festival, or the mid-Autumn festival, every year.  As its name implies, it is celebrated in mid Autumn.  Or more specifically, the 15th of the 8th of the Lunar year.  During the Moon Festival, people gather with their families and friends, or anyone they are close to.  Most Chinese families eat moon cakes, my family also have a traditional Chinese lunch and dinner.  We start off with a normal breakfast.

In the morning, my family eat toast with chocolate, peanut or butter spread for breakfast, and my sibling’s eat it with cereal.  But my dad likes to eat rice with any leftovers from the day before.  We don’t have any moon cakes the morning because my mum says it’s too sweet.  Sometimes I make instant coffee for the grown-ups in the morning (mum, dad and me), or just tea for myself.  We start eating moon cakes in the afternoon.

My brother and sister eat moon cakes in the afternoon for snacks at around 12 or 1, but not so many.  We have mooncakes in the afternoon thanks to my mum buying too many deluxe packs (which she does every year).  For lunch we usually have homemade dumplings or noodles in the fridge made by mum from yesterday.  One time my baby sister tried to make it, it ended up in a mess.  The dumplings are filled with eggs, bacon and beans it is delicious!  After some time after lunch, the sun begins to set, and it’s time for dinner, and more moon cakes.

When dad comes home at night, the tables are probably already set.  Dinner is the most important meal of the day to us.  We have fish, pork, vegetables, and of course, moon cakes!  Last year’s Moon Festival my mum’s friends came to New Zealand to take a tour.  They dropped by our house a day before the Moon Festival.  We had chicken wings, sweet and sour soup and fried rice.  After dinner, if we’re not full enough, we have a lot of moon cakes for dessert.  We get candy afterwards, and it’s always the brand that mixes a lot of candy together.

The Moon Festival is important to many Chinese families.  Where they are, they always gather at one place, home or restaurant, to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.  The lunar year calendar is different from the calendar we’re using, so the date changes every year.  This year’s Moon Festival is on the 8th of September, so the mooncakes are in stock in supermarkets.  My mum always buys the deluxe pack at the local Chinese market.

Coraline

My favourite part of Coraline is the dark feeling of the movie.   It just makes everything different, or spooky, in a way that I like.  It is made for children around 10, or even teens.  Adults tend to like it too, but as a horror story while children think of it as an adventure.  Coraline is one of my favourite movie’s of all time.

It all started when Coraline Jones moved into a creepy new house.  She is always bored, since her parents are always busy and when they’re not, they ignore her.  So she explored around the new house which is split into three parts.  Coraline visited the two retired actress’ who are living in the same part and a man who is training a mouse circus, which is all very weird.  Anyways, she is still bored and her dad who is doing nothing told her to count all the doors in the house.  It is then she came across a door with a brick wall behind it.  She experimented with the door a bit, and went to bed after eating dinner.

Coraline woke up in the middle of the night, woken up by the squeaking sounds the mice under her bed are making.  She followed the mouse, because she thought she would not go back to sleep anyway or just random curiosity to the bricked door earlier.  Strangely, the mouse can pass through the door.  Coraline opened the door, and the brick wall disappeared.  Instead of the brick wall, there is a peculiar tunnel.  She climbed through the tunnel, and ended up in her house where she just was.  But something’s different.  The house is decorated nicely, and her parents have buttons instead of eyes.

The Coraline movie is based on the book by Neil Gaiman, which is also named Coraline.  The movie is made by using stop motion, and as you all know stop motion films are very hard to make.  I watched the movie 2 times, one time when I was about six and I thought of the movie as a horror movie.  Now that I’m year 7, it just looks like an adventure story.

The Fence

She stands over there every evening, gazing over the fence, staring into the horizon. The girl took a deep breath of the salty seaside wind. The cool breeze is blowing over her expressionless face. The ocean waves are moving with the wind, and sometimes suddenly forms a wave that splashes onto the coast. She changed position and laid her hand on the moss-covered fence. It must have felt like touching a mix of cotton and grass. The sun started setting over the sea, which made a beautiful scene. The clouds gathered, the birds warbled and flew towards the setting sun in small groups. She continued standing there, focusing on the shimmering sea now reflecting the sun’s colors. A few fish splashed around not so far off the beach, and the wind picked up again. The girl turned, glanced back for a few seconds and went back to the little wooden lodge where she lived with her mother.

Presents

A big pile of presents was stacked carelessly at the bottom of the Christmas tree, after the Christmas party.  I stumbled to the pile, and picked up the most unusual present that had my name tag on it.  The present is a perfect circle, with a stand at one side.  I wondered what it was.  I shook the round present in my hand, but it made no noise except a ‘DING’ sound probably created by the stand.

The wrapping was made out of diagonal stripes with the color of Christmas.  I ripped the paper open, and inside was a globe, with the theme of Christmas.  No wonder it made no noise.  A Christmas tree, a reindeer and a bunch of pine trees sat neatly in the globe.  Small flakes flew around the black sky inside the globe.  The stand was colored red, tied with some bells.  So that was what made the tingling sound earlier.  BANG!  Someone threw the door open.  “What are you doing here?” She asked.  “We’re not suppose to open the presents until tomorrow! Leave that there, and go clean up the lounge.”  I left the globe where I found it, and followed her to the lounge.

How to Play President

President

President is a type of card game that you can play anywhere with a pack of cards.  It is recommended for 4 players or more, but it is also possible to play with two players.  The rules are easy, and it is a good way to pass your time if you are bored.  Once you find your cards, start with setting up the game.

Set up the game by dividing up the pack of cards evenly between the players you have.  When you’re finished there should be no cards left except the jokers.  The person with the three of clubs starts.  That player needs to put down the three of clubs.  The order of who will put down their card next will always go clockwise.  The next part is how to actually play.

After the person has put down the three of clubs, The person on his left(clockwise) will put down a card.  Their card needs to be bigger than three, for example four, six or queen.  The suit in the doesn’t matter.  Here is the order of the cards:
Smallest: 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - Jack - Queen - King - Ace - 2 :Biggest

As shown above, two is the biggest number.  I suggest that you save your 2, for it can win the round automatically.  If you don’t have any cards to put down, say pass, then you’re out of the round.  The next person puts down their card.  If no one in the group can put down a card bigger than the one on the table, the person who owns the card on the table wins the round, and gets to start.  If you have two, three or even four of the same number, you can put down a double.  Lets say I have three Jacks, I put down the three Jacks to start, the next person needs to put down three of either Queen, KIng, Ace or two.  This is a great way to play your cards since it uses a lot of your cards, and other players might not have doubles or triples.  The first person who finishes using all of their cards is the president.

Rankings are one of the special rules of this game.  President is the winner, vice president is the second, if you have 4 players then you won’t have neutral (or citizen).  The scum is the loser, vice scum is the player before scum.  Order 0f the rankings:
Winner : President - Vice Pres- Neutral(As many as you like) - Worker - Rubbish Picker ; Loser
Also, if you put down three cards in order in a row, then the next card and the next needs to be in order.  If I put down a 4, the next person puts down a 5, and the next a 6, then the next needs to be 7.  This only ends after the round is finished.

Also, in the next game, the rubbish picker gives his two best cards to the president, the president gives his two worst cards to the rubbish picker.  The worker gives him only one of his best card to the vice, and the vice gives him his one worst card.

I really like playing President, and I hope you do too.  It is a great way to pass your time with your friends or family.  The main point with President is luck.  With some good cards, even a rubbish picker can become a president.  I hope you have fun playing this game!

I remember as if it was Yesterday

We were on a trip to a snow filled park to celebrate Dad’s birthday.  I was 8 at that time, and everything was new since I’d never seen snow.  We rode on snow sledges, built a snowman with cup, and I remember very clearly that my sister lost a shoe when riding the ski lift.  When our time was nearly up, my mum brought me a pair of double snow skis.
“How can you call a snow trip a snow trip without skiing?” she said as she helped me put on the skis.

At first I was very bad at it, then I got a little bit better.  By that I mean I can walk without falling.  I then tried to ski a little, but fell and bruised my knee.  My other knee was bleeding.  Of course I cried, and my mum brought some band aids to me without saying anything.  All that’s left was 10 minutes, and the thought of giving up is nearly all I’m thinking.  Then, a little tiny piece of my mind said “I might never get another opportunity like this.”

I stood up, and spent the last 10 minutes doing the best skiing of everything I’ve done in the last eight years.  I got bruises bigger than the first one, but I didn’t care.  At the end, I could successfully ski for at least a meter.  It isn’t much, but it felt great.  The feeling of achieving something, I remember it as if it was yesterday.

Telling Where

The sparkling beach is crowded with people.  Toddlers are running, as if there is something invisible chasing them.  The shining sun sometimes turns dim, but brightens up again a few seconds later.  The smell of waffle cone ice cream’s wafted across the beach.

This is my hexagon art.
I used a protractor and a compass to do the outlines and then used pastels to color it.  The thing I like best about it is the repeating colors.  I would try a totally different pattern next time.

My choose your own is about creating my own dragon.  The original book is so different from the movie, in fact, they actually capture a dragon when they're young and tame it.  I'm currently reading Eragon, as well.

My own dragon:
Color - Gray/Silver/Violet
Favorite part: Wings
Special Points: Spikes in a line all the way from head to toe, a huge spiked ball at the tip of its tail, transparent and messy wings.

Alternatives for Keys

I researched three alternatives for keys.

Iris Recognition

Good point- Very accurate.
Bad point - Costs a lot of money.

Password code

Good point- It’s very simple, and cheap.
Bad point- People can hack it, and you might forgot the password.

Fingerprint

Good point- There is only one kind of each pattern of fingerprint in the world, so others can’t hack into your home.

Bad point- You’ll be mistaken if your thumb got a cut.

Dihydrogen Monoxide Poster

In April 2013, two presenters at Gator Country 101.9, a radio station in Lee County, Florida, told listeners dihydrogen monoxide was coming out of their water taps as part of an April Fool's Day hoax and were suspended for a few days by the station's general manager, Tony Renda. Renda later told NewsPress: "It is one thing when radio stations change their format or other crazy things they do. But you are messing with one of the big three, food, water or shelter. They just went too far; I just knew I didn't like that." The prank resulted in several calls by consumers to the local utility company, which sent out a release stating that the water was safe.

Make your own warning poster about this substance to put above the tap in the classroom.

Rubbish Every Year

Rubbish made by R6 per Year

The total number of rubbish R6 made every year is 16 760. Chippie packets, fruit peels and cores are the most rubbish made. It is awful that chippie packets are the most rubbish made because it is not biodegradable.

Rubbish made by 9 Classes per Year

The total of 9 classes’s rubbish, 150 840 is a large amount of rubbish! Thats about how many rubbish PBS made every year. That is so much rubbish that goes in the landfill.

The Greenhouse Effect

The Earth is getting hotter by emmision trapping the heat and buncing it back to Earth.  Emmision is producted by vehicles, farm animals and factories.  If icebergs (Northpole, Southpole) melts by the heat caused by emmision, little islands will get covered by water.

Holiday Reading Report

During the holidays the year seven and eight students did a program called Holiday Reading.  We needed to read three novels at home, and choose an activity to do when we finished reading the novels.  We did it so we could get better at our reading, writing and other subjects.

The activities available are set up in a Symbaloo, made by teachers of both the classes, Room 6 and 9.  Some of the activities Included Character photo, Radical Reading, Get active, Glorious Food, Setting, Character Portrait, Rewrite the Ending, New Cover and choose your own.  It is really simple and easy to do so it saves the student’s time.

I did Glorious food, Choose your own and Setting.  I used Google draw for my Setting activity, using shapes, lines, curves and scribble.  It was really hard to do.  Some of the things were hard to color because the line didn’t match up, so I drew it again and linked it up.  The main colors are green, white and red, because I think that the place I’m drawing is an Italian restaurant.

When the activity is finished, we posted it onto our blogs.  We need to include the book’s name and the author and illustrator’s name too.  Afterward the teachers commented on our post, then we commented back..

Holiday Reading was kind of fun because you can do things like drawing and cooking.  Some of the students didn’t achieve the goal of three books, some didn’t even do one.  I felt like my reading had gone up a level, and as a bonus we get prizes too.
