Shading

This is what I know about shading. It is hard to fit a picture in there, so I didn't attempt to.

Investigation - Hobbies

I surveyed 4 people in Room 6, including myself. This pie chart shows what things these 4 people do in their free time. They can have more than one choice. The most chosen option is internet/TV, with 50%.

Identity Survey

This is a survey we made with Mrs. Paton.  It is about learning more about other people in my class, and we send the form to each student in Room 6.  We will use this information to make a Google Sheets later.

3D Hand Art

1. Trace you hand with a pencil.(NOT VIVID)
2. Draw straight, even lines with vivid(If you want to you can do pencil first) in the background. Not on the hand.
3. Connect the lines with an arc over the space of the hand.  Don't do it too arched, or too straight.
4. Your end results should look like the picture, but without colour.
5. Choose two colours, and colour it in switching the colours every line.
6. Shade the colours to make the picture look 3D.

We made this piece of art to add to the Class Treaty.

Collaborative Art

We made a huge piece of art using little squares, each containing a quarter of a circle.  Each person in my class made 2 pieces, and then we put it together.  We measured the quarter circles using compasses, and colored it in using pastels.

Holiday Reading #3

Title: Harry Potter (Philosopher's Stone)
Author: J. K. Rowling
Genre: Adventure, Fantasy

Pumpkin Pastries/ Pumpkin Pie?

Ingredients

  • Chilled pie dough for one single-crust 9-inch pie (Pie crust recipe here)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (100 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup (65 grams) light brown sugar
  • 1 (15-ounce) can pure pumpkin puree or 2 cups (440 grams) fresh pumpkin puree
  • 3/4 cup (175 ml) heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • Method:
  • Prepare Pie Crust: Roll out dough so that it is two inches larger than your pie dish. Gently press dough down into the dish so that it lines the bottom and sides. (Be careful not to pull or stretch the dough). Trim dough to within 1/2-inch of the dish edge.
  • Fold edges of dough underneath itself, creating a thicker, 1/4-inch border that rests on the lip of the dish. Crimp edges.  Refrigerate while you make the pie filling.
  • Make Pie Filling: Whisk eggs and both sugars together until smooth. Add pumpkin puree, cream, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and the salt. Stir until well blended.
  • Bake Pie: Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Transfer pie shell to a baking sheet. Pour pumpkin filling into the pie shell. Bake pie at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees and bake 35 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick or thin knife plunged it into the pie, about 2 inches from the edge, comes out clean. Rotate once or twice during baking. If, while the pie bakes, the tops of the crust becomes too dark, cover with a thin strip of aluminum foil.
  • Cool Pie: Cool on a wire rack for 2 hours or until room temperature. Cut into 8 wedges and serve alone or topped with whipped cream.

Holiday Reading #1 - Stormbreaker - Sushi

How to Make Sushi - Sushi Rolls
By: Samantha Roberts

Sushi rice:

Ingredients:
3 cups of sushi rice
3 cups of cold water
½ cup of rice vinegar
2 tablespoons caster sugar
½ teaspoon of salt

Method:
1.Rinse the rice well in a sieve under cold running water.
2.Place rice in a bowl, cover with cold water and allow to soak for half an hour.
3.Drain rice and place in a saucepan.
4.Add 3 cups of fresh cold water and cover.
5.Boil with a high heat.
6.When the water boils, cook it again in a lower temperature until all the water is absorbed – about 10 – 12 minutes.
7.Tip cooked rice into a bowl and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
8.Mix vinegar, sugar and salt and drizzle over the rice, mixing with a wooden spatula or spoon.
9.Cool the rice. Putting together:

1.Lay out your bamboo rolling mat.
2.Place a sheet of nori(Seaweed), shiny-side down, on the mat.
3.Wet your hands with either rice vinegar or water and spread a thin layer of rice over the nori. Make sure you leave about a centimetre of empty space along the edge of the nori furthest from you – this is the strip that will stick the roll closed.
4.Place your filling ingredients in a row across the centre of the rice.
*Like carrots, pepper, salmon, ect.
5.Moisten the empty strip of nori with a little water
6.Take hold of the edge of the bamboo mat closest to you, roll it over the sushi and away from yourself. 7.Squeeze the sushi as you roll to compact and shape it.
8.(Optional)Place the finished roll on a cutting board and slice in to disks about 2 cm thick.

Tip: For making cutting easier, wait until the next day to cut it. Put it in the fridge covered with glad wrap, or similar.

Transformation Art

This is my transformation art.
It uses 3 media- Pastel, Crayon & Dye and Paint.
The first row is reflected
The second row is rotated
The third row is translated
I really like my first row.
Next time I would be more careful with my paint.

Time for Breakfst 2

Investigating example

Our question:
How long does the average person spend in the shower in their lifetime?
What we need to find out or estimate:
What is the length of an average lifetime?
What is the length of an average shower?

Our plan:
We know the average lifetime is 79 years because we found that information on the Statistics New Zealand
website.

To work out the length of an average shower we are all going to time ourselves and other members of our family in the shower and then use these times to calculate an average time.

Person
Time in shower
Jack
8 minutes
Jack’s mum
3 minutes
Andrew
15 minutes
Andrew’s dad
5 minutes
Andrew’s brother
6 minutes
Sarah
12 minutes
Sarah’s sister
8 minutes

8 + 3 + 15 + 6 + 5 + 12 + 8 = 57
57 ÷ 7 = 8.1, 8 minutes

We asked our families and most people have a shower every day, but some people have more than one a day
and some people have less than one a day so we are assuming the average person has one shower a day.

In 79 years there are 79 x 356 days = 28 124 days.
28 124 days x 8 minutes = 224 993 minutes
224 993 minutes ÷ 60 minutes in an hour = 3 749 hours
3 749 hours ÷ 24 hours in a day = 156 days
156 days ÷ 30 days in an average month = 5.2 months

Our conclusion:
The average person spends just over 5 months of their life in the shower.

Think about:

How did they work out their average time spent doing the activity?
Work out the average number, time how many years people usually live for by how many days in a year.  Take the answer, time it by the average number and take the answer and divide it by 60.  Take that answer, divide that by 24, and then the answer to that divide by 30 is how many months they spend in the shower/ bath.
What maths knowledge and strategies did they use?
Times, divide, plus, the average number.
What is the formula for working out an average?
By adding their time together and divide by the number of people.

Water Experiment

On Monday 2nd December, Sally from Watercare came to teach us about where water goes after we flushed it down the toilet, sink, bath and shower.  At the end we did an experiment, where we mixed some salt into containers of water and add food colorings.  Then we made a rainbow with the food colorings in a little tube by holding our thumbs at one end and the other end will not drip.  Sally said that the more salt you put in, the more dense it is.  It will sink if its dense.  The water you used this morning might be drank by a dinosaur once!
