Leaf
The leaf flutters and glides
the same as a bird
down towards the ground.
It perches
looking upwards to the sky
on its back
and then is carried away by the wind.
Math
My learning intention was transformation - slide, flip and rotate/turn.
My activity was on studdyladder.
It was easy because it was simple to remember.

I am a Wave
I am a Wave
I am a wave waiting
to be washed
ashore.
I’m somedays HUGE,
I am sometimes powerful
and sometimes gentle.
I travel with the
sea and the sea
with me.
I have water inside so
if you touch me
you’ll feel like winter.
I journey along the sea with
nothing inside me.
I’m jolly with the sea with
blueness surrounding me.
I like being a wave because I can
visit every shore around
the world.

Time for Breakfst 2
Investigating example
Our question:
How long does the average person spend in the shower in their lifetime?
What we need to find out or estimate:
What is the length of an average lifetime?
What is the length of an average shower?
Our plan:
We know the average lifetime is 79 years because we found that information on the Statistics New Zealand
website.
To work out the length of an average shower we are all going to time ourselves and other members of our family in the shower and then use these times to calculate an average time.
Person
|
Time in shower
|
Jack
|
8 minutes
|
Jack’s mum
|
3 minutes
|
Andrew
|
15 minutes
|
Andrew’s dad
|
5 minutes
|
Andrew’s brother
|
6 minutes
|
Sarah
|
12 minutes
|
Sarah’s sister
|
8 minutes
|
8 + 3 + 15 + 6 + 5 + 12 + 8 = 57
57 ÷ 7 = 8.1, 8 minutes
We asked our families and most people have a shower every day, but some people have more than one a day
and some people have less than one a day so we are assuming the average person has one shower a day.
In 79 years there are 79 x 356 days = 28 124 days.
28 124 days x 8 minutes = 224 993 minutes
224 993 minutes ÷ 60 minutes in an hour = 3 749 hours
3 749 hours ÷ 24 hours in a day = 156 days
156 days ÷ 30 days in an average month = 5.2 months
Our conclusion:
The average person spends just over 5 months of their life in the shower.
Think about:
How did they work out their average time spent doing the activity?
Work out the average number, time how many years people usually live for by how many days in a year. Take the answer, time it by the average number and take the answer and divide it by 60. Take that answer, divide that by 24, and then the answer to that divide by 30 is how many months they spend in the shower/ bath.
What maths knowledge and strategies did they use?
Times, divide, plus, the average number.
What is the formula for working out an average?
By adding their time together and divide by the number of people.

Before you start highlight 4 words you don’t know and look them up in the dictionary.
Aerobics - a form of physical exercise that combines rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and strength training routines.
Carbohydrate - a large biological molecule, or macromolecule, consisting of carbon (C), hydrogen (H), and oxygen (O) atoms.
Fatigue - a subjective feeling of tiredness which is distinct from weakness.
Incapacitated - deprived of strength or power; debilitated.
Why are there two index entries for drugs?
Because there are two kinds of drugs. They can’t put them together.
Which two entries will help you find out about tiredness and how to cope?
Rest and pharmacist.
Which pages would you turn to in order to find out about injuries?
60 - 65
Which two entries would you use to find out more about healthy eating?
Diet and vitamins.
Which pages would you turn to in order to find out about the bad effects of smoking? Lungs and smoking.
On which pages would you find out about hospital life?
40-44 & 48 - 65.
Why do you think there are two ranges of page numbers for lungs?
Because halfway through lungs they started about the breathing chapter and then it go back to lungs.
On which pages would you find out more about the healthy effects of sport?
15-20.
